Laser scar removal before and after*

Lasers are often used to improve the appearance of the skin but Dr. Omar Ibrahimi’s passion is to use lasers to treat complex medical conditions. Here is an example of a recent patient of Dr. Ibrahimi who suffered a severe burn from scalding cooking oil which lead to a hospitalization and multiple surgical procedures. This patient saw Dr. Ibrahimi and with a series of powerful laser treatments he was able to reduce the scarring significantly. This has not only improved the appearance of the scar which made the patient feel extremely self conscious but even more importantly help restore mobility and range of motion. It is one of the most gratifying things Dr. Ibrahimi gets to do as a physician.

Laser scar removal before and after images demonstrate the amazing reduction in the appearance of scars that is possible with laser-based therapies. As with any cosmetic procedure, results may vary.*

What is Scar Reduction?

Scars are our body’s way of healing quickly from some sort of physical trauma, whether it is an accident, surgery or some other form of trauma on the skin. While the body attempts to heal as fast as possible, scars can be a painful and cosmetically displeasing reminder of this painful event. While the presence of a scar can be a badge of honor for some, for others scars are unpleasant, disfiguring, and can make one feel self-conscious or embarrassed. No matter what type of scar is present or where it is located, many treatment options can help to reduce its appearance.

How Does Laser Scar Removal Work?

Scars are created when the body uses too much tissue (keloid or raised scars) or too little tissue (depressed scars, like pitted acne scars) to replace tissue that was damaged during trauma. Non-invasive scar removal works by stimulating the body’s natural healing mechanism to repair itself. During your scar reduction treatment, a cosmetic laser is used to penetrate the skin and heat the various skin layers. The thermal energy warms the tissues, stimulating the body’s rejuvenation process. This improves the appearance of scarring in several ways.

As part of the healing response, the body resurfaces the scar. Doing so removes the outer layer of damaged skin and replaces it with healthy skin cells. This smooths out the scar.¹Thermal energy can also reduce redness and discoloration of scars. It does this by heating the blood vessels within scar tissue, causing the vessel to collapse.² Lastly, laser scar treatments can stimulate the creation of more collagen and elastin to remodel the scar tissue.¹

What Types of Scars Can Be Treated?

There are four main types of scars:

  1. atrophic scars
  2. hypertrophic scars
  3. keloid scars
  4. burn scars

There are many treatment options for scars. While atrophic scars are skin depressions, hypertrophic, and keloid scars are elevated or raised. Your treatment plan will depend on the type of scar you have and many other factors that are best determined during a consultation.

At Connecticut Skin Institute, we use numerous different lasers depending on the presenting features of the scar. For example, we can use pulsed dye lasers or KTP lasers for scars that are more red, pigment lasers for scars with hyperpigmentation, and fractional lasers (Fraxel and Fractional CO2) to help with scars that are raised, atrophic or need to blend more with the surrounding skin.

We treat the full spectrum of scars, including:

  • acne scars
  • keloid scars
  • surgical scars (breast implant, breast reduction, skin cancer scars, C-section scars)
  • dog bite scars
  • burn scars
  • and more

How much does laser scar removal cost?

The Connecticut Skin Institute utilizes a spectrum of laser-based technologies to reduce the appearance of various scars. Scar removal prices depend on:

  • the type of scar being treated
  • the type of laser used in the treatment
  • the number of laser treatments required

During your consultation, we will discuss which laser treatment is right for you and customize a treatment plan that is tailored to your goals and your budget.

Several studies have demonstrated high patient satisfaction rates with the cosmetic outcome of various laser treatments…Modern advancements in laser technology have enhanced the ability of laser devices to improve the appearance, symptoms, texture, and pliability of all scar types.”¹

A comprehensive analysis of laser-based scar reduction studies, published in Advances in Wound Care, summarized the academic consensus saying:

“Evidence regarding the efficacy of laser treatment on surgical scars, hypertrophic scars, and keloids… overall shows good results when the correct therapy is chosen for a particular indication.
