STAMFORD, Conn. (WTNH) There’s a non-invasive way to get rid of that extra fat under your chin. FDA-approved Kybella is now available in Connecticut.
Dermatologist Dr. Omar Ibrahimi of the Connecticut Skin Institute is the first in the state offering the injection.
It emulsifies the fat cells or breaks them open, he said.
It dissolves the fat, sharpening the jawline for a more defined look, without surgery.
It’s absolutely revolutionary because it’s the first and currently only drug that is FDA-approved to treat this area, said Dr. Ibrahimi.
A temporary grid pinpoints the area for the series of injections.
This is really our kind of a safe treatment zone where we will inject the product, he said.
The shots aren’t so discomforting for Nancy O’Connell, on her second visit as she tries to get rid of the double chin look.
Not bad at all. It really, really wasn’t, she said. Maybe once in awhile it was a big ouch.
But it’s not for everyone.
Anybody that has any sort of history or difficulty of swallowing, I usually exclude them for treatment because the swelling you get from the procedure can potentially combine or add onto that preexisting problem, said Dr. Ibrahimi.
With one round of Kybella behind her, O’Connell is already seeing some benefit.
I see a little bit of a cut where there was no cut, she said. It was kind of like straight down.
Dr. Ibrahimi recommends two to four visits for best results. It is not a way to lose weight, he says, but there is an added plus to it.
Just improving that can actually make the face appear to be more youthful, he said.
Patients can expect swelling, bruising, and possibly some soreness.
It is not covered by insurance.
The cost per visit at the Connecticut Skin Institute depends on how extensive the treatment is, and can range from $1,000 to $2,400.
