Winter Skin Woes: Beating winter itch

It is nearly March and the weather is finally starting to improve, but does your skin still feel trapped in the dryness of December? Here is some information about beating winter itch and springing into soft, seductive skin this season:

Winter Skin Woes: Why?

You are not imagining that itchy sensation that seems to creeps up on you every year after the last of Autumn leaves fall. Winter itch is typically physiologically related to the dryness that exists during the winter season and can be attributed to a combination of low humidity, harsh winter winds, and dryness related to indoor heating.

Bathing: Avoiding common missteps

Although the dipping temperature may have us craving long hot showers, think twice before you turn that shower dial far left. Hot water tends to dry out skin. Lukewarm baths and showers are preferable. In addition, limit soap use to areas where you feel soap is necessary only-do not lather soap throughout body as this can strip the body of its natural hydrating oils. Limit your soap selection to mild soaps without strong fragrance or harsh ingredients.

Post-Bathing Protocols

Make sure that you moisturize your skin after bathing. This helps lock in the water from your shower. In general, creams are more moisturizing than lotions. Ointments, such as petroleum jelly, are even more ideal if the slimy feeling does not bother you.

Nourish your body

Although drinking your recommended 8 glasses of water may seem more relevant in the hot summer months, remember to keep hydrated during the dry winter months as well. In addition, purchasing an indoor humidifier can help keep the air in your home at a comfortable moisture level for your skin.

We were also the first provider in CT to have the new CoolSculpting Mini applicators for the double chin fat.  We are currently the only practice in CT to have the new Cool Advantage applicators which allow us to do the treatments in half the time. That’s right, instead of an hour per applicator, now we can do it in only 35 minutes! treatment.  With our new hand-pieces and two machines, we  may be able to do the same treatment in a little over an hour! Also, the new hand pieces are more comfortable and have fewer side effects, with the same results.

Small clip of Dr. Ibrahimi’s talk where he touches on what to look for in a SPF (we apologize in advance for the shaky video):

Dr. Ibrahimi’s talk focused on skin cancer and aging gracefully. Did you know that the incidence of skin cancer is greater than the incidence of breast, prostrate, lung and colon cancer combined? If you have fair skin, eyes or hair, you are at greater risk for skin cancer. Dr. Ibrahimi covered the following in his talk:

  • Non-melanoma Skin Cancers
    • Basal Cell Carcinoma
    • Squamous Cell Carcinoma
  • Mohs Surgery vs Excisions
  • Melanoma
  • Melanoma Outcomes
  • Reconstructive Surgery
  • Sunscreen: what to look for in sunscreen
  • Photoaging/the aging process
  • Lasers including Fraxel and Ultherapy
  • CoolSculpting for non-invasive removal of fat through freezing
  • Birthmark removal with lasers
  • Kybella for neck/double chin
  • Cellfina for cellulite

The ABCDEs of Melanoma:

Dr. Ibrahimi really emphasized on the ABCDEs of melanoma which are:

A -Asymmetry

B – Border and Bleeding

C -Color

D -Diameter > 6 mm

E – Enlarging, evolving

The so-called ABCDEs of melanoma have been an extremely useful heuristic for practitioners and laymen in identifying clinically suspicious lesions which suggest malignancy. In ambiguous situations, this doesn’t work as well. For example, it is very possible that just about every dermatologist could relate a story about a melanoma which exhibited none of the ABCDEs.

The event had women in business from all across Fairfield and Westchester Counties and beyond including folks from Greenwich, Stamford, Norwalk, Darien, New Canaan, Westport, Weston, Wilton, Ridgefield, Danbury, Rye, Larchmont, and beyond.

Kybella: FDA approves injection to eliminate a double chin.

double-chin-kybella-stamford-ctIs a double chin ruining your selfie photos? Or do you work out and eat healthy but just cannot get rid of your double chin? Well, we have some very incredible news for you.The FDA just approved an injectable called Kybella that can eliminate a double chin with a series of quick injections. Dr. Ibrahimi has been talking about this drug for months and is very excited to be offering it soon in his own office. Stay tuned for more details on when it will be available in our office. Below is what you need to know for now.

What is Kybella?
Kybella is identical to deoxycholic acid which is produced in your body. Deoxycholic produced in the body helps the body absorb fats.

How does Kybella work?
Kybella is a cytolytic drug, which when injected into tissue physically destroys the cell membrane. When properly injected into submental fat, the drug destroys fat cells.

How much does it cost?
Given that the medication was just FDA approved, pricing information is not yet available.

How long does it take to inject Kybella?
The procedure is an in-office set of injections.

Is Kybella safe?
In the hands of a well trained dermatologist that is trained in the anatomy of the area, yes. According to a press release from the FDA, the safety and effectiveness of Kybella for treatment of submental fat were established in two clinical trials which enrolled 1,022 adult participants with moderate or severe submental fat. Participants were randomly assigned to receive Kybella or a placebo for up to six treatments. The results showed that reductions in submental fat were observed more frequently in participants who received Kybella versus placebo.

What are the most common side effects of Kybella?
The most common side effects of Kybella include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness in the treatment area.

Worried about Skin Cancer? 5 MUST READ Signs You Should Never Ignore by Stamford based dermatologist Dr. Omar Ibrahimi

Skin-Cancer-Detection-Basal Cell-Squamous Cell- Melanoma-Stamford-Dermatologist

Did you know, over the past three decades, more peope have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined? While you likely won’t die from the most common form of skin cancer, it can have a huge impact on your quality of life and can lead to disfigurement of your skin if left untreated. Early detection and treatment can results in extremely high cure rates with minimal cosmetic impact.

The following are 5 signs/symptoms that can indicate you have skin cancer:
  1. Your lesion is changing. Change is one of the most important indicators of concern for a skin lesion. When these changes occur over a period of weeks to months, it should be evaluated by a board certified dermatologist.
  2. Your lesion is new. A new spot, especially one that looks different from other spots on your body should be evaluated by a board certified dermatologist.
  3. Your lesion is bleeding. If your spot bleeds with no or minimal trauma, this may require evaluation by a board certified dermatologist.
  4. Your lesion is tender. If your spot is tender or painful, especially if this happens suddenly, it should be evaluated by a board certified dermatologist.
  5. Your lesion has multiple colors. Melanoma is often characterized by lesions that have multiple shades of brown, and sometimes even black, blue, red and white.
The three most common types of skin cancer are:

If caught early, all of these types of skin cancer are treatable.Mohs surgery is the single most effective and best technique for removing BCCs and SCCs, the two most common skin cancers, with a cure rate of 98-99%. Mohs surgery can also be used to treat some melanomas. Mohs surgery is also the best method for tissue sparing (removing the entire cancer with minimal removal of normal skin).

Jennifer Aniston, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars is aging gracefully and naturally with Ultherapy

Jennifer Aniston may not be pregnant, but she sure does have glowing skin.

Today’s celebrities have access to the best doctors money can buy, however, achieving natural and meaningful results without looking overdone is elusive for many Hollywood A-listers. One star who has aged gracefully and naturally is Jennifer Aniston who looks just as great as she did when the tv show Friends first aired.

What is her secret? It’s not seeing a plastic surgeon and going under the knife. It’s actually doing non-invasive treatments like Ultherapy that not only reverse the aging process but can slow it down. Non-invasive procedures, in the hands of a skilled dermatologist, can be used to help remove red and brown spots, wrinkles, and treat scars and enlarged skin pores. Believe it or not we can also non-invasively tone and tighten skin such as the jowls and neck and treat fat all without the risks or downtime of surgery.

One of Aniston’s favorite treatments is Ultherapy. Invented at Harvard, Ultherapy is the only FDA-cleared procedure to non-invasively lift the eyebrow, neck, under-chin, decolletage and wrinkles. Ultherapy is a great choice for folks that do not want the downtime associated with a facelift.

5 must read tips to consider prior to getting any laser, injectable or other noninvasive or minimally invasive cosmetic procedure.

Beautiful young woman in spa. Facial massage.Thinking about getting a cosmetic procedure? Well, you aren’t alone. As per a survey done by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, 52% of consumers are considering a cosmetic skin procedure. In fact, dermatologists were the physician of choice for many of the cosmetic procedures. There are many great non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures available that can help with skin tightening, treating wrinkles, removing scars, tattoos and birthmarks, lip augementation, getting rid of fat/bodysculpting. However, before you get any treatment, it is very important to considerthe following 5 tips.

  1. Think about what your goals are.Give some thought to what you are looking to achieve. Is it the softening of some wrinkles, removal of red/brown spots, or reshaping your nose? Knowing what you are looking for and being able to articulate it will help define the next steps to take.
  2. Set up a consultation.Once you have a sense of what you are looking to do, go in and speak to a physician with expertise in the type of procedure you are looking for. The majority of lasers, device and non-invasive procedures such as Botox and filler injections were pioneered by dermatologists, whereas a procedure like a rhinoplasty (nose job) or breast implants would be more in the domain of plastic surgery. The consultation gives you an opportunity to discuss the procedure, the risks, expected downtime, and expectations for results. It also gives you an opportunity to see if you like and trust the physician. Always ask who is performing the procedure. Confirm that your physician is not just “board certified” but has formal training in dermatology or plastic surgery.
  3. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.If you are told a procedure has no side effects, it probably doesn’t work or the person consulting with you does not have enough experience to understand that any procedure that gives results, comes with potential side effects. Now that doesn’t mean that many procedure can’t be done very safely and with minimal downtime, but a proper informed consent includes a discussion of even the most uncommon of potential side effects that may be serious. Even a procedure as common as laser hair removal comes with some serious risks that can be avoided by an experienced provider.
  4. Less is more.If you are unsure of what you want to do, don’t feel pressured to undertake or do any procedures. Remember these type of procedures are elective, and should only be done, if you feel confident in the plan you have made with your physician. If you have not done any cosmetic procedures, start slow. Non-invasive procedures like lasers and injectables can give you a refreshed and rejuvenated look and be subtle enough that no one will be able to tell exactly what it is that you have done. My happiest patients are those who come back and say their friends tell them how great they look but aren’t able to tell they had any work done.
  5. Safety first.Beware of choosing to have a procedure done at a medical spa or office solely because of price. Low prices may sometimes be an indicator that the office lacks proper training, or is not busy enough. Just because a medical spa has a laser does not mean that it provides the equivalent expertise that one would get at a physician’s office. One interesting FACT that most people are unaware of is that 75% of recent lawsuits involving lasers/devices occur in the hands of non-physician operators and predominantly in a medical spa setting. Feel free to look for the best deals possible when you shop for clothing but do not gamble with the health and safety of your skin. The best upfront price does not always equal best value.

Shapewear for Eyes

Neotensil - Connecticut Skin Institute

New technology continues to revolutionize the world of aesthetics. Traditional cosmetic surgeries with recovery periods lasting for weeks are rapidly being replaced by safer, noninvasive procedures. Laser and other non-invasive procedures offer patients the benefits of skin rejuvenation with minimal pain, risk or downtime. Treatment options span the gamut and include permanent hair removal, spider vein reduction, resurfacing to remove red/brown spots, rejuvenation, acne/acne scar treatment, fat removal and wrinkle treatments. Although these procedures may be provided in many settings, they are safer when performed by a board-certified dermatologist. Many of these technologies were developed and innovated by dermatologists.

One of the most common concerns among patients is undereye bags. Conventional remedies require a scalpel, prolonged downtimes, and a signature scar. The latest technological breakthrough for undereye bag treatment, however, is a polymer-based film that can be applied at home to tighten and flatten the bulging undereye skin. Neotensil was created by a group comprised of MIT scientists, and Harvard dermatologists. The product works through Strateris, a cross-linking film that clings to the skin and shrinks until the puffy bulges under the eyes are smooth. This undereye film can be worn up to 16 hours. It is easy to apply and effectively hides any loose, sagging skin. The thin film works in a way that is similar to body shapewear but moisturizes as it smooths.

Dr. Omar Ibrahimi, a dermatologist and medical director for the Connecticut Skin Institute in Stamford, specializes in noninvasive cosmetic techniques. He is a leader in the research and development of non-surgical skin care remedies and offers an array of innovative treatments. His office was a clinical trial site for Neotensil and he was the first physician in the state to offer this technology.

Undereye bags no longer has to plague your beauty regimen. Surgery is no longer the only option to effectively treat undereye bags. Follow the advice of Dr. Omar Ibrahimi and other notable dermatologists; cover your undereye bags with Neotensil’s two interacting gels for a cool, comfortable, safe approach to beautiful skin.

Should You Get Botox From a Dermatologist, a Plastic Surgeon or a non-physician?

Woman showing the wrinkles

Do you have unwanted facial wrinkles? For many, a simple injection may be the solution. Do you know who to call?

Currently botulinum toxin is available in numerous FDA approved products including Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin for a variety of treatments. Treatments range from cosmetic purposes to alleviating migraine headaches. Only the most qualified healthcare professionals should administer botulinum toxin. Both dermatologists and plastic surgeons have formal training in facial anatomy. The initial use of botox cosmetically and many of the clinical studies for botox were performed by dermatologists.

Why is it important to choose the right healthcare professional?

The term Botox is short for botulinum toxin. When administered by an unqualified individual, the risks of side effects may be higher. With that being said, it is highly important to choose the right healthcare professional when considering treatments.

Who should administer the injection?

Dermatologists are highly trained doctors of medicine specializing in skin care and disease treatment. In addition to medical school, dermatologists undergo years of intense training dealing with their specialty, including detailed facial anatomy. For many dermatologists, the injection of botulinum toxin is a routine procedure. In fact, dermatologists were the pioneers in developing botox for the treatment of unwanted wrinkles of the face.

Dr. Omar Ibrahimi is a very highly rated and accomplished board certified dermatologist specializing in many fields of skin care. In addition to his dermatology specialty, he has conducted fellowship training for the injection of botulinum products.

Are there other reasons to choose a dermatologist?

No patient is exactly alike. Every patient has a different need, a different wrinkle, or a different face shape to treat. Experienced dermatologists will be able to tailor treatments to the needs of each individual patient. For optimal results, it is important to choose a dermatologist with a proven track record for success.

Are side effects an issue? Proper injection technique can help reduce the side effects of treatment. A physician who works with the treatments regularly will be prepared for treating the potential side effects.

Dr. Omar Ibrahimi has been conducting injections as a regular part of his everyday practice with minimal side effects and amazing results. Therefore, he is a top choice for many patients for administration. After all, why would you choose any less than the best?
